Takeaways
These are the four categories of the most significant things that I learned during my time at Harbor Labs.
Computer Science
During my internship I have gained many technical skills in computer programming, software engineering, and cryptography. These include:
-
Cryptography: web vulnerabilities (SQL injection, cross-site scripting), encryption, public keys, private keys, hashes, etc.
-
Penetration Testing Techniques (Wireshark, OWASP ZAP)
-
Software Engineering: Github, development and production environments, documentation, SSH, etc.)
-
Computer Programming: Command Line (Bash), Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP
Business Marketing
During my internship I have had the opportunity to work closely with the CEO of Harbor Labs, Nick Yuran. Nick has provided me with much insight into business, including online advertising, corporate branding, and strategic operations. It has been so impressive to see a business so small receive such success and publicity, and it is thanks to Nick's careful analytics-based management. This has inspired me to pursue a minor in Business Analytics.
Technical Writing
Through editing litigation technical reports for clients, I have developed strong technical writing skills. In particular, I was able to improve my technical writing through learning how to write concisely while still maintaining the details required to produce a comprehensive report.
Professional
Skills
During my internship I have gained valuable professional skills. First I was able to practice my communication skills when working with a team of programmers. I also learned how to efficiently and strategically manage projects in order to meet strict deadlines. Finally, I learned that the professional world is one that requires constant learning even after graduating school, as new technologies and methods are constantly emerging in our modern world.
